About Ibizans
From the Ibizan Hound Club of the United States
"THE IBIZAN HOUND IS NAMED FOR THE ISLAND OF IBIZA OFF THE COAST OF SPAIN. OFTEN NOTED FOR ITS DEER-LIKE ELEGANCE, THIS GRACEFUL BREED WAS A HUNTING COMPANION TO THE PHARAOHS OF ANCIENT EGYPT BEFORE BEING BROUGHT TO IBIZA BY PHOENICIAN TRADERS.
CLASSIFIED AS A SIGHT HOUND WHOSE PRIMARY QUARRY IS RABBIT, IBIZANS ARE VERSATILE HUNTERS, UTILIZING HEARING, SIGHT AND SCENT. THIS MEDIUM-SIZED HOUND IS KNOWN FOR ITS ATHLETICISM AND AGILITY WHICH INCLUDES A UNIQUE ABILITY TO JUMP SIX FEET INTO THE AIR FROM A STANDSTILL. ITS ADMIRERS DESCRIBE ITS TEMPERAMENT AS FUN LOVING, AFFECTIONATE AND LOYAL."
"The Ibizan Hound is more slow to mature than many larger breeds. Many dogs maintain their active and puppy like behavior well into their senior years. The Ibizan Hound is a soft natured breed and, as such, harsh training methods are to be discouraged. The Ibizan Hound enjoys a working relationship with their family but is very independent in nature."
Ibizans are, on average, a very intelligent, moderately high energy breed with a lot of prey drive. They're known as "Peter Pan dogs" because of their goofy sense of humor that lasts well into their senior years. When socialized well, Ibizans range from friendly to neutral with strangers, and very affectionate and loving with family.
They are very smart dogs, who will always find a way to get something that they want, but they may not always follow commands. Repetitive training will quickly bore them, and they can express their frustration with flailing, barking, or turning their lithe bodies into pure stone and refusing to move. Despite this, they can and do love training when it's executed in a fun and exciting way, and they can excel in many sports (such as agility, obedience, or trick training) with a handler who understands this.
Most Ibizans will fall between 35-70 lbs, with females typically being slightly smaller and finer boned. They also range from 22-29 inches at the shoulder, and can easily hug the average person while standing on their hind legs (as many owners know from experience). Some typical quirks of the breed include a love of bouncing and butt scratches (complete with a happy "butt scratch dance" when someone accommodates them), "skanking", or rubbing their face and body in smells they love, and being absolutely unrepentant for their sins.
